Proposals to AFAAR for alternatives research funding are accepted by invitation only.
Highlights of 2009-10 funding include:
- Commissioning investigation of animal use in vaccine development research and its alternatives.
- Sponsorship of the InterNICHE (the International Network for Humane Education) conference to promote alternatives in college/university/professional education.
- Four scholarships, in honor of Dr. Ethel Thurston, for doctoral level students from around the world to attend the VII World Congress on Alternatives & Animal Use in the Life Sciences, awarded for merit and promise in the field of alternatives to animal research.
- Supporting the advancement of the Mandatory Alternatives Petition, to compel the U.S. government to mandate the use of validated alternatives to replace the use of animals in drug and product testing.
